A few years ago I wanted to make the biggest pot I had ever made. I built her so slowly over 2 months and then fired her so carefully. She survived a first firing but when I pulled her out of the second firing, she had a giant crack all along the bottom edge. I was so angry but have come to reflect that, the pot didn’t break, it only cracked. Her final form only existed with the crack and she would not have stayed together anywhere else if she hadn’t cracked. I struggled in thinking of the pot as “broken,” but came to believe that she would not have made it to her final form without the crack. It was part of her shape, not a deficiency of her final shape.
